about

At its core, the Common Tongue EP is a social criticism of post-Brexit society. In the track 'Common Tongue', this is achieved by telling the tale of Josh Eggerton's (singer) hometown, Telford, which was part of the post-war 'new build' movement in England. Like many towns of this movement, Telford was left to decay after cuts in government funding turned the town into a cultureless void of empty promises.

In the midst of Brexit, Eggerton recounts overhearing “a group of people talking in a pub about growing up in their town (a new build) and blaming minorities for the downfall of their town.” Eggerton explains the deep effect the Brexit campaign has had on his town and surrounding areas as it has reintroduced and allowed for racist slurs back into society.

“Is it common interest or is it the common tongue” translates into “do you share the same interests with the person sat next to you, or are you just agreeing with them because you share the same language, skin and culture.”

lyrics

Is it a common interest?
Or is it the common tongue?
White washed opinions made on an empty throne
I know its above their heads
Washed in acid and bleach
Another feral rant in here, another dreamless sleep

Lights roll forward
You’re still pointing in the dark
Turquoise confusion
Assuming you’re the pillars of society

Rats in a cage clutching at weathered straws
Pumped with steroids and fear
Put your sacred lives at risk
Slap it on a screen, tell them what to believe
They’ll take it away, your comfort in pain

Lights roll forward
You’re still pointing in the dark
Turquoise confusion
Assuming you’re the pillars of society
Futures put to slaughter
The lords own children lining up at the cattle troth
Your words are feeling colder
The thawing of a forgotten heart
Can you feel it?
The thawing of a forgotten heart
